Service-based competition is as fierce as it’s ever been. While the causes for this are myriad (product commoditization, accelerating customer expectations, globalized value chains, etc.), companies have been turning to the IIoT to solve for these challenges. Specifically, remote monitoring is increasingly regarded as the best springboard to better service. In fact, Gartner explicitly recommends the IoT for field service management improvements.
Of course, the answer isn’t as simple as “just add IoT.” On the one hand, the prevailing wisdom among best-in-class service leaders is to build on connectivity and monitoring. But that doesn’t solve for the variables across assets, fleet structure, physical accessibility, and technician interaction. So even if we winnow IoT technology down to remote monitoring, a “one-size-fits-all” approach to service still doesn’t exist.
The good news is that most service organizations have all of the data they need to create and customize their own remote monitoring strategy. The key is to focus IoT investments—including industrial connectivity, remote monitoring, anomaly detection and predictive analytics—around key performance indicators (KPIs).
